Oktoberfest 2026 in Munich: getting there by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, on foot and by taxi

Where is the Theresienwiese and how do I get there?

The Theresienwiese is the festival meadow at Theresienwiese, 80336 München, named after the bride of the royal wedding of 12 October 1810; take the U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese or Schwanthalerhöhe, the U3 or U6 to Goetheplatz or Poccistraße, or walk just under 15 minutes from the main station.

On foot: leave the main station by the south exit, follow Bayerstraße to the right, turn left into Hermann-Lingg-Straße and walk almost straight to the main entrance at the north end of Wirtsbudenstraße, following the ground markings, with the Bavaria in view at the end.

The Oide Wiesn, the historic fair, has its own entrance in the southern part of the grounds; the Familienplatzl is on Straße 3 Ost, the Ferris wheel on Straße 5, and the Bavaria stands at Theresienhöhe 16.

How do I get to the Oktoberfest by S-Bahn and U-Bahn?

Take any S-Bahn to Hackerbrücke and walk about 10 minutes, or the U4 or U5 to Theresienwiese (right at the grounds, and the most crowded station) or Schwanthalerhöhe, or the U3 or U6 to Goetheplatz or Poccistraße, each about 10 minutes on foot; from the Hauptbahnhof the signposted walk takes just under 15 minutes.

The organiser's rule 7 for 2026: use alternatives to the U4 and U5 and to the Theresienwiese station; rule 8: use all entrances around the grounds. MVG says the U3 and U6 stations Goetheplatz and Poccistraße are usually less in demand than the U4 and U5, and that their building works pause during the festival; the S7 and S20 also stop at Heimeranplatz. Deutsche Bahn tells regional train passengers to ride to the Hauptbahnhof and walk.

Buses and trains run about 9,000 extra trips during the festival (19 September to 4 October 2026), with more than 230 extra MVG staff on duty each day; the U-Bahn runs through the night from Friday to Saturday, from Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays. There is no visitor parking at the Theresienwiese; the taxi ranks are on Schwanthalerstraße, Kaiser-Ludwig-Platz, Herzog-Heinrich-Straße and Hans-Fischer-Straße, and bicycles, scooters and skateboards may not enter the grounds.

Walk: from the station to the meadow

Start: Hauptbahnhof, south exit. When: Any time; the grounds are closed from 01:30 to 09:00. The way and the audio stories: Just under 15 minutes on the marked route from the station's south exit via Bayerstraße and Hermann-Lingg-Straße to the main entrance, with the Bavaria in view at the end; audio stories at Karlsplatz, the Old Botanical Garden and the Wittelsbach Fountain, a short detour before you start.

What may I bring, and what not?

Bags up to 3 litres or 20 by 15 by 10 cm, checked and tagged by security staff at every entrance; no glass, no spray cans, no corrosive or colouring substances and nothing usable as a knife or weapon; strollers until 18:00 and never on Saturdays or 3 October 2026; about half the stands take cards, so carry some cash.

Official rules for 2026:

• Drinks may come onto the grounds, but not in glass bottles and not into the tents or beer gardens.
• Large luggage goes to the left-luggage points at entrances P1, P5, P8 and P10 for 5 EUR.
• No bicycles, scooters or skateboards on the grounds; no animals except assistance dogs.
• Nobody may stay on the grounds between 01:30 and 09:00.
• Use all entrances around the grounds, not only the main one.

Cash: ATMs of several banks stand at the entrances, with a withdrawal limit of 1,000 EUR; the Augustiner-Festhalle, the Bräurosl, the Löwenbräu-Festzelt and the Ochsenbraterei take cash only.

There is no dress rule: many guests wear Dirndl or Lederhosen, jeans are just as acceptable, and how the bow is tied says something (left single, right taken, back centre waitress or widow). Shops are closed on Sundays and on 3 October 2026.

From 2026 the festival's lost and found office is in the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum, Am Bavariapark 5, daily 13:00 to 20:00.
