Mangalem Quarter

Berat's historic Muslim quarter climbs the slope on the right bank of the river Osum below the castle. It is known for the façades with tiers of windows that gave the city the name City of a Thousand Windows. During the Second World War, families in the quarter hid Jews from the Nazi occupiers.
