## Can I stand on the bench or on the table in a tent?

So the bench and the table are two different things in 2026:

- The middle of a big tent, the Mittelschiff (the centre nave, where the unreserved tables are): standing on the bench with the Maß in your hand is allowed and expected once the band is going. The Abendzeitung wrote on 13 September 2026 "Auf den Bänken stehen und feiern ist hingegen erlaubt, und wird auch teils exzessiv getan" (standing on the benches and celebrating, on the other hand, is allowed, and is sometimes done to excess).
- The galleries, the Emporen: no standing on the benches, by the city rule and by the tents' own house rules. The Schützen-Festzelt writes "Bitte beachten Sie, dass auf unserer rundlaufenden Galerie das Stehen auf den Bänken aus Sicherheitsgründen untersagt ist" (please note that standing on the benches of our circular gallery is forbidden for safety reasons).

How a local toasts: hold the Maß by the handle, a full one weighs about 2.5 kg, clink base to base, look the other person in the eye and say Prost, in the words of a Munich city magazine of 19 September 2025 "Glasboden an Glasboden, Blickkontakt und Prost sagen". Nothing to eat or drink from outside goes into a tent: the Schützen-Festzelt's terms read "Es dürfen keinerlei Speisen und Getränke in das Festzelt mitgebracht werden." In the tents' own beer gardens on the grounds the Armbrustschützenzelt and the Festzelt Tradition do allow your own food, never your own drinks. In a Munich beer garden away from the Wiesn your own cold Brotzeit (a cold, simply prepared snack) is a custom with a long background: on 4 January 1812 King Max I. Joseph let the Munich brewers sell their own Märzen at their cellars but expressly forbade them to serve food, so guests brought their own.

The Maßkrug stays the tent's property. Taking one out is theft under section 242 of the German criminal code: stewards take it off you at the exit, and stubborn cases get a criminal complaint and a ban from the grounds. About 116,000 mugs were taken off guests in 2025, against under 100,000 in 2024, and in 24 cases of dangerous bodily harm that year a Maßkrug was the weapon. Whether a deposit is charged on the mug at table service is disputed between sources, and the 2026 Hofbräu and Bräurosl menus print no deposit line, so all that can be said is that the mug is never sold with the beer; the official annual mug is the way to take one home.

Children and young people: under 16s are served no beer, wine or Radler, with the exception in federal law that a 14 or 15 year old accompanied by a parent or guardian may drink them, and nothing spirit based is served under 18. Children under 6 may not be in a beer tent from 20:00, even with their parents, and under 16s are in tents and beer gardens, and on the whole grounds after 20:00, only in the company of a guardian.

## What is Ein Prosit, and what music do the tents play?

Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit is the short toasting song a tent band strikes up two to four times an hour: everyone stands, raises the Maß through its two lines and, on the call Oans, zwoa, drei, gsuffa (one, two, three, drink up), the mugs meet in the middle of the table; what else may be played is written into the city's operating rules for 2026, which allow traditional brass only before 12:00 and no music meant to heat the tent up before 18:00.

The words are two lines, sung twice: "Ein Prosit, ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit", then the call "Oans, zwoa, drei, gsuffa!" In plain English that is "a toast, a toast to good cheer", then Bavarian for "one, two, three, drink up". Gemütlichkeit has no single English word: cosiness, conviviality, the feeling of being at ease among people. Prosit itself is Latin, the third person singular present subjunctive of prodesse, "may it be of use, may it do you good"; it came into German through student slang around the start of the 18th century and was shortened to Prost in everyday speech.

The song is not Bavarian. It was written in Chemnitz in Saxony at the end of the 19th century and is usually credited to the choir director Bernhard Dietrich (1840 to 1902); a minority attribution names the Bremen journalist Georg Kunoth, whose name the Volksliederarchiv prints with the 1913 songbook Gesellenfreud in which the words appear. It reached the Theresienwiese through the Nuremberg innkeeper Georg Lang, who built the first big hall there in 1898, put a thirty man band on the stage and handed out a good 50,000 song booklets so that his guests would sing.

How often it comes back is the bandleader's decision, not a quota, and it works as the tent's clock: it ends one run of songs, gets everyone on their feet and puts the mug back into every hand. The Merkur and tz festival portal collected the counts on 7 April 2015: the Hofbräu-Festzelt about 50 times a day and up to 80 on a weekend day, the Hacker-Festzelt two to four times an hour, the Schützen-Festzelt about 20 times a day, the Schottenhamel about every fourth or fifth number. Closing the 2022 festival, the then Festleiter Clemens Baumgärtner called Layla the most played song of that year, "getoppt nur vom Dauerbrenner 'Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit'" (topped only by the evergreen Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit); GEMA's own count had the Prosit at number one in 2017 and in 2018.

What else may be played is written down. The same 2026 operating rules of the City of Munich set, in section 44, an average level of 85 dB(A) until 18:00 from Sunday to Friday and 90 dB(A) after 18:00, and 90 dB(A) all day on Saturday, with a special rule of 90 dB(A) all day for tents that commit to traditional brass music and declare it to the festival management by 1 September 2026. Three sentences of that section govern the mood: "An allen Tagen darf vor 18 Uhr keine 'aufheizende Musik' gespielt werden" (on all days no heating up music may be played before 18:00), "An allen Tagen darf vor 12 Uhr nur traditionelle Blasmusik gespielt werden" (on all days only traditional brass music may be played before 12:00) and "Der Einsatz eines DJ's ist untersagt" (the use of a DJ is forbidden). Bands play through the house system only, and in the tents' beer gardens only unamplified traditional live music is allowed, with relayed music switched off at 22:30.

The quiet afternoon is a deliberate arrangement of 2005, when the city and the tent landlords agreed on traditional brass at a limited volume until 18:00 and the party repertoire only after it, so that the afternoons stay calm for families and older guests. For 2026 the music in the big tents starts an hour earlier, at 11:00 on weekdays and at 10:00 on the second and third weekends and on 3 October 2026, with only traditional brass until 12:00, a crowd steering measure decided in May 2026 after the crowding of 2025. For a visitor that reads simply: come before 18:00 for brass and conversation, after 18:00 for the party.

- By day, Bavarian and Bohemian brass, marches and polkas: the Bayerischer Defiliermarsch, the Tölzer Schützenmarsch, the Bozner Bergsteigermarsch, the Kaiserjägermarsch, the Radetzkymarsch, the Erzherzog-Albrecht-Marsch, Alte Kameraden, the Oktoberfestwalzer and the Krinoline Polka, all on the 2025 open air programme of the tent bands, plus In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus.

Two pieces of ceremonial music belong to the festival as much as the Prosit. On the second festival Sunday, 27 September 2026 at 11:00, about 300 musicians from all the big tents play together on the steps below the Bavaria, the mayor conducts the Bayerischer Defiliermarsch, and the Bayernhymne closes the concert while thousands of balloons rise. On the last night each tent has its own farewell: the Hofbräu-Festzelt turns the lights out when Angels sounds and thousands of sparklers light up, the Hacker-Festzelt ends with Sierra Madre, the Schützen-Festzelt with Weus'd a Herz hast wie a Bergwerk, the Augustiner-Festhalle with the Defiliermarsch, and the Krinoline carousel with Lili Marleen.

## About Roots Earth

Roots Earth needs no account: open Munich in the app, pick a place and play; download Munich's audio, then it plays without a connection.

The stories are written by local people, and every one of Munich's 98 places has its audio story in all seven Roots Earth languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch and Albanian.

During the festival the program, the tents and experiences and the 25 places are in the Roots Earth app, Munich section, under Events and Activities for Germany; after Sunday 4 October 2026 that section switches off by design and the Munich audio stories stay.

Across the app, Roots Earth has audio stories for 5,665 places in 130 cities, 25 countries and 6 regions, as counted in the live catalogue on 12 September 2026: audio stories in English and German in every city, and in Spanish, Italian, French, Dutch and Albanian in 126 of the 130 cities.
