Flag Square is the heart of Vlorë and the cradle of the Albanian state. Here, independence was proclaimed in nineteen twelve, Ismail Qemali lies buried, and the bronze monument erected by the communist regime embodies the Ottoman, national and dictatorial layers of this same patch of land.
