Saint Mary's Monastery at Zvërnec

This Orthodox monastery stands on an island covered in pines in Narta Lagoon. Its stone church shows Byzantine influence and was probably built in the thirteenth century. Under communism, the monastery was turned from a place of prayer into a political prison.
