# Domplein and Roman Traiectum

Utrecht, Netherlands

Beneath this open square lie the remains of Traiectum, a Roman fort built around 47 AD on the Rhine frontier. The crossing it guarded gave Utrecht its name, and excavations have revealed Roman walls, roads, and the foundations of a vanished cathedral nave.
