Barrage Vauban

Barrage Vauban, Strasbourg

A fortified weir of pink sandstone built across the River Ill between 1686 and 1690 by engineer Jacques Tarade, following Vauban's plans. Its thirteen arches could flood the city's southern approaches; its rooftop terrace now frames Strasbourg's finest view.
