Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle, Shkodra

The castle stands on a rock one hundred and thirty metres above Shkodër. It was built by the Illyrian tribe of the Labeates in the fourth century before Christ and was later enhanced by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. It bears the name of Rozafa, the woman who, according to legend, was walled into the foundations so that the walls would stand.
