Ebu Bekr Mosque - Local name: Xhamia Ebu Bekr - Coordinates: 42.0677416, 19.5140218 - In one line: Shkodër's largest Sunni mosque, rebuilt by the Muslim community near the site where the Fushë Çela Mosque stood before the atheist regime destroyed it in 1967. It was inaugurated on 27 October 1995 with Saudi support, after 24 years of imposed silence. ### 2. Orthodox Cathedral of Shkodra - Local name: Katedralja Ortodokse e Shkodrës - Coordinates: 42.06868056, 19.51495556 - In one line: The Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, the seat of the Metropolis of Shkodër and Pukë, was built in the early 2000s under the direction of Archbishop Anastas Yannoulatos after 23 years of the prohibition of religion during the communist dictatorship. ### 3. Marubi National Photography Museum - Local name: Muzeu Kombëtar Marubi - Coordinates: 42.0685809, 19.5155712 - In one line: The oldest photographic archive in the Balkans, founded in 1856 by the Italian Pjetër Marubi and continued by three generations of the Marubi family, preserves nearly 500,000 negatives documenting 130 years of Albanian life, included in UNESCO's "Memory of the World" register. ### 5. Gjuhadol Promenade - Local name: Pedonalja Gjuhadol - Coordinates: 42.067805, 19.516878 - In one line: The main pedestrian street of Shkodër, officially named Kolë Idromeno, about eight hundred metres paved with cobblestones after a renovation programme launched by the Municipality at the end of the two-thousands. It connects the historic Catholic quarter of Gjuhadol with the Austro-Hungarian commercial zone and preserves Habsburg-style façades and wooden balconies. ### 6. Cathedral of St Stephen - Local name: Katedralja e Shën Shtjefnit - Coordinates: 42.06542, 19.51992 - In one line: The Catholic Cathedral of Saint Stephen, built beginning in 1858 under the direction of an Austrian engineer, was one of the largest churches in the Balkans of that time. In 1967 it was closed and converted into a Palace of Sports by the communist regime, and was returned as a church after 1990. ### 7. Site of Witness and Memory - Local name: Vendi i Dëshmisë dhe Kujtesës - Coordinates: 42.065, 19.516944444 - In one line: The former headquarters of the Shkodër Internal Affairs Branch, where the Sigurimi i Shtetit interrogated political suspects from 1946 to 1991. It opened in September 2014 as the 1st museum in Albania dedicated to the victims of communism. ### 8. Shkodra Lead Mosque - Local name: Xhamia e Plumbit e Shkodrës - Coordinates: 42.046481, 19.499435 - In one line: An Ottoman mosque raised by Mehmet Pasha Bushati between 1773 and 1774, distinctive for its twelve lead domes. On 16 November 1990 it became the first mosque publicly reopened in atheist Albania, with more than 50,000 worshippers present according to estimates from Albanian sources. ### 9. Rozafa Castle - Local name: Kalaja e Rozafës - Coordinates: 42.0465304, 19.4939106 - In one line: A castle on the rock 130 metres above Shkodër, raised by the Illyrian Labeates in the 4th century BCE and enriched by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. It bears the name of Rozafa, the woman of the legend walled into the foundations so that the walls would stand. ### 10. Shirokë Village - Local name: Fshati Shirokë - Coordinates: 42.0590016, 19.4575375 - In one line: A fishing village five kilometres west of Shkodër, on the shore of the largest lake in the Balkans. Around a hundred families draw their living from the water, with a tradition that reaches back to Illyrian antiquity, and the shore is known as a Ramsar site for its international importance to migratory birds. ### 11. Mes Bridge - Local name: Ura e Mesit - Coordinates: 42.11448, 19.574976 - In one line: An Ottoman bridge of limestone with 13 arches and a length of 108 metres, built by Mehmet Pasha Bushati around 1768 over the river Kir. It was restored after 2008 with traditional technique and today serves pedestrians only. ### 12. Drisht Castle - Local name: Kalaja e Drishtit - Coordinates: 42.1235, 19.6112 - In one line: The ruins of the medieval city of Drivastum, 10 kilometres northeast of Shkodër, which for a thousand years was a religious, commercial and military centre of northern Albania.
