# Port of Sfax

Opened to traffic in 1891, the artificial port of Sfax replaced a modest wooden pier and turned the city into Tunisia's busiest commercial harbor. It shipped phosphates, olive oil, and esparto, and remains a vital trade and fishing hub today.
