Paço Imperial

The Paço Imperial, built between 1738 and 1743 on Praça XV, served as Brazil's colonial, royal, and imperial seat of power. Here Princess Isabel signed the 1888 abolition of slavery. Today the austere colonial palace houses a cultural center.
