Tiradentes Monument

Inaugurated in 1894, this bronze statue by Italian sculptor Virgílio Cestari honors Tiradentes, martyr of the 1789 independence conspiracy. It stands on the square where his severed head was displayed in 1792, deliberately turned away from the former Governors' Palace.
