Place Masséna is Nice’s Italianate civic centre, where ochre arcades surround bold black-and-white paving. A buried river, a vanished casino, monumental fountains and Jaume Plensa’s elevated figures all contribute to the square seen today; its openness is largely the result of the casino’s demolition.
