Hannya-ji

Hannya-ji, Nara

A tranquil temple famed as the Cosmos Temple for the thousands of flowers that bloom each autumn. Restored in the Kamakura period by the reformer Eison, it guards a stone thirteen-story pagoda from 1253 and a romon gate that is Japan's oldest surviving example.
