Templo Mayor

Templo Mayor, Mexico City

The ritual heart of Aztec Tenochtitlan, this great twin temple to Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc was begun around 1325 and razed by the Spanish in 1521. Rediscovered in 1978, its excavated platforms and the Coyolxauhqui monolith reveal a buried empire.
