The Almohad Caliphate seized Marrakesh in 1147 and made it the capital of a vast empire spanning North Africa and Muslim Spain. Founded on the strict monotheism of Ibn Tumart, it gave the city its Koutoubia Mosque, kasbah, and monumental gates.
