### 1. Koutoubia Mosque

- In one line: Marrakech's largest mosque, raised by the Almohads from 1147, crowned by a 77-metre sandstone minaret topped with copper orbs. Its slender tower became the model for Seville's Giralda and Rabat's Hassan Tower.

### 2. Jemaa el-Fnaa

- In one line: The medieval heart of Marrakech's medina, a vast open square of storytellers, musicians and night food stalls. Proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, it changes character entirely from day to dusk.

### 3. Bahia Palace

- In one line: A grand 19th-century palace begun in the 1860s by the vizier Si Musa and vastly enlarged by his son Bou Ahmed around 1900. Its 150 rooms, painted cedar ceilings and zellij courtyards epitomise Moroccan-Andalusian craftsmanship.

- In one line: The dynastic necropolis of the Saadian sultans, built in the late 16th century under Ahmad al-Mansur. Sealed off for centuries and rediscovered in 1917, its Hall of Twelve Columns dazzles with Carrara marble and muqarnas vaulting.

- In one line: A vast ruined palace built between 1578 and 1593 by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur and named the Incomparable. Once gilded with gold and onyx, it was stripped to build Meknes, leaving sunken gardens, a great basin and storks nesting on its high earthen walls.

### 6. Ben Youssef Madrasa

- In one line: Once the largest Quranic college in the Maghreb, founded by the Marinids in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 1560s by the Saadians. Around 130 student rooms surround a courtyard pool framed in carved cedar, stucco and zellij.

- In one line: A botanical garden begun in 1923 by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, famous for its cobalt blue villa and collection of cacti, bamboo and palms. Rescued and restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, it now houses the Berber Museum.

- In one line: A 12th-century Almohad olive grove and vast irrigation reservoir on the edge of Marrakech. Its green-roofed pavilion mirrored in the still water, backed by the snow-capped High Atlas, forms one of the city's most photographed views.
