La Croix-Rousse

Known as the hill that works, this 254-meter slope is lined with tall-windowed buildings raised for the canuts, silk weavers whose 1831 revolt was among Europe's first workers' uprisings. Its steep stairways and traboules now shelter a village-like creative quarter.
