Belém Tower

A fortified Manueline tower of pale lioz limestone, built from 1514 to 1520 to guard the River Tagus for King Manuel I. Carved ropes, armillary spheres and a stone rhinoceros adorn what is now a UNESCO-listed emblem of the Age of Discoveries.
