Tō-ji

To-ji, the East Temple, was founded in 796 to guard the new capital's gate. Entrusted to the monk Kukai, it became a center of Shingon Buddhism. Its five-story pagoda, rising 54.8 meters, is the tallest wooden tower in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
