Kyoto, Japan

Tenryu-ji is the leading Rinzai Zen temple of Kyoto, founded in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji to honor Emperor Go-Daigo. Its Sogenchi garden, designed by the monk Muso Soseki, borrows the Arashiyama mountains as living scenery and survives as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
