Otagi Nenbutsu-ji

Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, Kyoto

First founded in the 8th century and had its hall and gate transferred to the Sagano hills in 1922, this Tendai temple is famous for 1200 moss-cloaked stone arhats. Carved by amateur worshippers between 1981 and 1991, each face wears a different, often playful, expression.
