Nanzen-ji

Nanzen-ji is a leading Rinzai Zen temple founded in 1291 on a retired emperor's villa, ranked above Kyoto's Five Mountains. Its towering Sanmon gate, rebuilt in 1628, and a striking 19th-century brick aqueduct draw visitors to its gardens at the foot of the eastern hills.
