Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine, Kyoto

Heian Shrine was built in 1895 to mark Kyoto's 1100th anniversary as capital, honoring Emperor Kanmu. A partial scale replica of the ancient imperial palace, it gleams in vermilion and green and is fronted by one of Japan's largest torii gates, set among strolling gardens.
