Chion-in

Chion-in is the head temple of Jodo, or Pure Land, Buddhism, founded where the monk Honen taught and died in 1212. Rebuilt by the Tokugawa in the 17th century, it boasts Japan's largest wooden temple gate, rising 24 meters, and a colossal bell rung by seventeen monks each new year.
