Adashino Nenbutsu-ji

Adashino Nenbutsu-ji, Kyoto

In Kyoto's Sagano hills, this Pure Land temple traces its origin to 811 and the monk Kūkai. Around 8000 weathered stone statues, gathered from a vast old burial ground for the nameless dead, stand in silent ranks, lit by candles each August.
