# Krujë Castle

Kruja, Albania

The fortress stands on a steep hill rising about five hundred metres above the Ishëm valley and served as the base of Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottoman Empire between fourteen forty-three and fourteen sixty-eight. Its walls withstood three sieges during his lifetime and fell only in fourteen seventy-eight. Today the Kala quarter remains a living neighbourhood, with residents still living inside the walls.
