The Renaissance gardens of Heidelberg Castle, begun in 1614 by Salomon de Caus for Elector Friedrich V. Praised in its day as the Eighth Wonder of the World, it was never finished, halted by the Thirty Years War, and survives as terraces, grottoes and statuary.
