Gjirokastra, Albania
Bazaar Mosque

Built by Memi Bey in the mid-eighteenth century in the heart of the Bazaar, this is the only mosque in Gjirokastër that survived the atheist campaign of nineteen sixty-seven. During the twenty-four years it was closed, it served as a warehouse, a circus gym and later a tailoring workshop. Following restoration by TIKA, the call to prayer is once again heard five times a day.
