# Labovë e Kryqit

Gjirokastra, Albania

The Church of the Dormition of Saint Mary is one of the oldest in Albania, with a cross-in-square plan and nine layers of Byzantine frescoes. Its foundation is attributed to Emperor Justinian in the year five hundred and fifty-one; the silver cross he donated, which held a fragment of the wood of the True Cross, was stolen in nineteen eighty-nine.
