# Serapeum of Saqqara

Giza, Egypt

A vast underground gallery at Saqqara where the sacred Apis bulls were entombed in colossal granite sarcophagi, each weighing dozens of tonnes. Rediscovered by Auguste Mariette in 1850, the tunnels were used from the New Kingdom into the Ptolemaic age.
