# Brunelleschi's Dome

Florence, Italy

Filippo Brunelleschi raised this dome between 1420 and 1436 with no wooden centering beneath it. Its double shell and self-locking herringbone brickwork solved a problem no one had cracked, and it remains the largest masonry dome ever built.
