Cusco, Peru

The Inca Festival of the Sun, honoring the sun god Inti at the winter solstice. Banned by Spanish authorities, it was revived in 1944 and is now staged every June 24, with its grand finale enacted on the esplanade of Sacsayhuamán above Cusco.
