Temple of Heaven

Temple of Heaven, Beijing

A Ming ritual complex begun in 1406 for the Yongle Emperor, where rulers prayed to Heaven for good harvests. Its blue-tiled, triple-eaved Hall of Prayer, round altar, and Echo Wall embody an ancient cosmology of round Heaven and square Earth.
