First Cemetery of Athens

Opened in 1837, the official cemetery of Athens is an open-air museum of nineteenth-century funerary sculpture. Set among pines and cypresses behind the Panathenaic Stadium, it holds the graves of poets, prime ministers and Heinrich Schliemann, and the celebrated marble Sleeping Maiden.
