Aswan, Egypt
Monastery of St. Simeon (Gabal Tingar)

A ruined 6th-century Coptic monastery on the desert hills west of the Nile near Aswan. Once one of Egypt's largest fortified monasteries, its mudbrick walls, keep, and church still rise above the sands beside the Gabal Tingar quarry.
