Portuguese Synagogue, Amsterdam

The Portuguese Synagogue, known as the Esnoga, was built between 1671 and 1675 for Amsterdam's Sephardic Jewish community. Still lit by candles rather than electricity, it survived the Second World War intact and houses the historic Ets Haim library.
