Pompey's Pillar

Pompey's Pillar, Alexandria

A towering Roman column of red Aswan granite, raised around 298 of the common era to honour the emperor Diocletian, not Pompey, despite its misleading name. Standing nearly 27 metres tall at the ruined Serapeum, it is the largest ancient column in Egypt.
